What German level do nurses need for Germany?

Last reviewed 3 November 2026 by the Fliego team

The short answer

Most German states ask nurses for B2 German for full professional recognition, and some accept a nursing-specific B2 exam. B1 is often enough to start the process or an adaptation course. The rules differ by state and change over time, so always check with the recognition authority.

Why German matters so much for nurses

In Germany you talk to patients, families, doctors and colleagues in German all shift, and you write care notes in German. That is why the recognition of a foreign nursing qualification (the Anerkennung) includes a language requirement as well as a check of your training.

The levels, simply put

LevelWhat you can doWhere it fits for nurses
A1Introduce yourself, simple everyday phrasesThe first step for everyone
A2Short conversations about routine tasksHalfway to B1
B1Handle most everyday situations, describe experiencesOften enough to start the recognition process or an adaptation course
B2Talk fluently with native speakers, follow detailed discussionsThe usual level for full recognition as a nurse

General B2 or nursing B2?

Some authorities accept a general B2 certificate. Others accept or prefer an exam made for care work, such as telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege, which tests situations like handovers and talking with patients. Which one you need depends on the state where you apply, so ask before you book an exam.

A realistic timeline from zero

  • A1: about 8 weeks at 5 live classes a week
  • A2: by about month 5
  • B1: by about month 9
  • B2: a further several months after B1

These timings depend on attendance and daily practice and are not guaranteed. See how long each German level takes for the teaching hours behind them.

How to plan around your shifts

Questions people ask

Can I apply to work as a nurse in Germany with B1?

Some employers and recognition routes let you start with B1, for example to begin an adaptation course or work as a nursing assistant while you finish the process. For full recognition as a registered nurse, most states expect B2. Check with the recognition authority for the state you are going to.

Which German certificates are accepted for nurses?

Certificates from the Goethe-Institut, telc (including telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege, an exam made for care workers) and ÖSD are commonly accepted. Each authority sets its own list, so confirm before you book an exam.

How long does it take a nurse to reach B2 from zero?

Goethe-Institut guidance puts B2 at roughly 450 to 600 teaching hours in total. At about 7.5 hours of live class a week that is around a year to a year and a half, with daily homework. It depends on your attendance and practice.

Does Fliego help with recognition or nursing jobs?

No. Fliego only teaches German. For recognition and visa steps, use official sources such as Anerkennung in Deutschland and Make it in Germany.
